Anthony Fauci on Re-Thinking Next-Generation Vaccines

On Wednesday 11 January, a review article authored by Anthony Fauci and two of his colleagues titled “Re-Thinking Next Generation Vaccines” appeared in the journal Cell Host & Microbe. The paper was eye-opening, to say the least. Dr. Fauci and his co-authors begin by informing us that, like the viruses that causes measles, mumps, and rubella, the coronavirus enters the body via the upper respiratory tract. Unlike these other viruses, the coronavirus multiplies rapidly and passes its peak of infectivity before it even has much of a chance to enter other body compartments, and before the humoral immune even has time to mount an effective response. Moreover, the genomes of the other aforementioned viruses contain overlapping reading frames, which tends to put a damper on mutations, including escape mutations. The coronavirus does not.
